Yellow Submarine was a planned 3D computer-animated remake of the original film and directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film was scheduled to be released in 2012, but the project was ultimately cancelled after another Disney animation project (Mars Needs Moms) bombed at the box office. This, along with a poor turnout for another animated Disney film, a remake of (A Christmas Carol), resulted in Disney shutting down the animation studio behind the film's development. As a result, the film was cancelled. However, concept art of the project and early models are available online.

Plot[]

As was in the original movie, Old Fred ventures in the Yellow Submarine to Liverpool to find those who can help him save Pepperland from the Blue Meanies.

Production[]

Variety reported in August 2009 that Walt Disney Pictures and director Robert Zemeckis were negotiating to produce a 3D computer-animated remake of the film. Motion capture was to be used, as with Zemeckis' previous animated films The Polar Express, Monster House, Beowulf and A Christmas Carol.

Disney and Apple Corps Ltd. officially announced the remake at the inaugural D23 Expo on September 11, 2009. Comedian Peter Serafinowicz was cast to voice Paul, Dean Lennox Kelly as John, Cary Elwes as George, Adam Campbell as Ringo and David Tennant was in talks to voice the Chief Blue Meanie.

California-based tribute band, The Fab Four was to do the motion capture performance for the animated Beatles.

Release[]

According to the story, Disney and Zemeckis hoped to have the film released for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

In May 2010, Disney closed Zemeckis' digital film studio, ImageMovers Digital.

On March 14, 2011, Disney abandoned the project, citing the unsatisfactory yet successful performance of A Christmas Carol and the disastrous opening weekend results of Simon Wells' Mars Needs Moms. Criticism towards motion capture technology was also a factor.

Revival[]

In November 2023, it was announced that Timeless Films, Align, GFM Animation, Bidibul Productions and L'Atelier Animation had picked up Yellow Submarine earlier in the year replacing Disney and ImageMovers Digital, and would be releasing it on Netflix in December 2023. The voice cast was retained, with the addition of Ian McKellen as Old Fred announced at this point. Olly Reid were announced as the new director of the film, having previously directed Monster High: Welcome to Monster High. Axis Studios was announced to have taken over animation of the film.
